gotomarketing

From WordPress to a custom platform on web and mobile.

gotomarketing is Hungary's largest marketing library for small and medium-sized businesses: 500+ lessons, masterclasses, weekly live sessions and a community of 2000+ business owners. We replaced the WordPress site it had outgrown with custom, cross-platform development: one codebase powers desktop and mobile web plus the iOS and Android apps, and a lesson now loads eight times faster than before.

The challenge

The library outgrew WordPress.

gotomarketing has been growing every week since 2018. Hundreds of videos, masterclasses, transcripts, extra materials, subscriptions and an active community all ran on a WordPress site that demanded a compromise for every new idea and kept slowing down under the weight of its plugins. The question wasn't how to patch it, but how to build something that could carry the next 500 lessons, along with a team that moves in step with gotomarketing.

  • Every feature was a compromise

The WordPress site was assembled from a theme and plugins. Every new idea had to be bent to fit what a plugin could do, and every update was a risk.

  • Slow, because too much was running

Plugins piled on top of each other, and a lesson took 4.16 seconds to load. In a video library, that's the point where a member gives up and closes the tab.

  • Learning on the go

Members are business owners: they learn in the car, in a queue, between two meetings. That calls for real iOS and Android apps, not a squeezed-down website.

  • It needed a team, not a plugin

gotomarketing evolves every week. It needed a development team that moves with it: one that ships in short cycles and doesn't treat change as a new quote.

The starting point

4.16 seconds for a lesson to load.

The decision: no patching, a rebuild. For four platforms, from one shared codebase.

Speed

From 4.16 seconds to 518 milliseconds.

In a video library, waiting is the most expensive second: it's the moment a member decides whether to start the lesson at all. On the WordPress site a lesson loaded in 4.16 seconds; on the new platform it loads in 518 ms.

Load time for one lesson

Lower is better. The same lesson on the old and the new system.

Client measurement: full page load of a lesson.

  • No plugin layer

On the old site every feature was another plugin, each loading its own code on every page. The new platform runs only what the screen actually needs.

  • Search that filters as you type

Search doesn't reload the page: it filters while you type, even without accents, across titles, descriptions, transcripts and keywords at once.

  • Fast on every device

The same fast foundation powers desktop and mobile web as well as the iOS and Android apps: there is no “slow version”.

The solution

The library as it works today

Three screens carry the experience: the home page recommends, search finds, and the player keeps you moving. All three are custom built and work the same way on desktop, mobile web and in the apps.

Real designs from the new web interface. Longer pages scroll inside the frame.

  1. 01. A home page that recommends

After logging in, members don't land on a list but on the latest lesson with a large image, followed by a “Continue where you left off” row and dynamic playlists by topic. Each card shows how much you've watched, and a padlock marks what isn't in your plan.

    • Progress on the card

  2. 02. Search and filter the whole library

Search filters as you type, works without accents, and looks in titles, descriptions, transcripts and keywords. Alongside it are filters for category, area, speaker, plan, length and transcript. A filtered search can be shared as a link.

    • Searches transcripts too
    • Works without accents
    • Shareable filters

  3. 03. A player that keeps you moving

Adjustable speed, a timeline split into chapters, Picture-in-Picture and audio-only at the tap of a button. Below the video: an action plan, the transcript, personal notes, extra materials, and clickable tags for the speaker, the area and the course.

Mobile web, iOS and Android

The same, in your pocket.

The iOS and Android apps are built from the same codebase as the web interface. Cross-platform development with a native experience: members pick up a lesson where they left off, even in the car, as audio, with the screen locked.

  • Pick up where you left off, even across devices: start on the laptop, finish on the phone
  • Switch between video and audio with one tap; audio keeps playing in the background and can be controlled from the lock screen
  • Push notifications about new lessons, events and announcements, with an unread counter
  • Same account and membership: the web login works in the app too

Features

Seven features, one goal: turning knowledge into action

gotomarketing isn't a video archive, it's a learning system. Every feature helps members find, understand and put into practice what they've learnt.

Search that finds as you type

Even without accents, across titles, descriptions and transcripts at once. A filtered search can be shared as a link.

The All lessons screen on mobile: search, topic tiles, filter buttons (length, transcript, topics) and the results list.

Continue where you left off

The first row on the home page holds unfinished lessons, and each card shows how much you've watched. Synced across devices.

Video or audio

Switch at any time. Audio keeps playing in the background at your own speed and can be controlled from the lock screen.

A player built for learning

0.5–2× speed that sticks, a timeline split into chapters, Picture-in-Picture, and the transcript next to the lesson.

Notes and favourites

Personal notes for every lesson with autosave, favourites, a “Watched” marker and downloadable extra materials.

Events and notifications

One-click event sign-up with guests and a countdown. Push and email notifications, each switchable on its own.

Contractor Plaza

Contractors who can actually implement the lesson, by category and with star ratings. Contractors edit their own profiles.

Technology

Modern tools, scalable foundations.

The goal wasn't a prettier WordPress but a platform that can carry gotomarketing's next years: more content, more members, more surfaces, fewer compromises. That's why we chose custom, cross-platform development with modern tools and a backend that won't need replacing again in two years.

  • Custom development, not a template

Every screen is tailored to gotomarketing's content and workflows. No plugin that wants something different from the client.

  • A scalable backend

500+ videos, thousands of members, new content every week. The foundation is built to carry the next 500 lessons too.

  • One codebase, four surfaces

Cross-platform development: desktop and mobile web and the iOS and Android apps are built from the same code and backend. A new feature lands everywhere at once.

  • Migration without downtime

Existing members, content and subscriptions moved to the new system while the library stayed open.

How it was built

We didn't repaint it. We rebuilt it.

We took gotomarketing's new platform from concept to live operation: redesign, desktop and mobile web, iOS and Android apps, backend and subscription management, all in the hands of one team. The library didn't close for a single day.

  • Multi-platform redesign

A dark, video-first interface in the brand's identity, designed from the start to feel at home on desktop, mobile web and native apps.

  • Desktop and mobile web

A custom web application in place of the WordPress site: home, library, search, player, events, profile, subscription and invoices.

  • iOS and Android apps

From the same cross-platform code, with a native experience: background audio, lock-screen controls and push notifications.

  • Scalable backend and content management

Videos, transcripts, action plans, extra materials and expert recommendations managed in one place and served to three surfaces.

  • Subscriptions and payments

New, simpler payments and plan changes, all invoices in one place, and individual courses that can be bought without a subscription.

  • Migration from the old system

Members, content and subscriptions moved over while the platform kept running. Members log in with their old passwords.

Agile, in a two-week rhythm

gotomarketing didn't get a package delivered six months later, but a better product every two weeks.

  1. Step 1Planning
  2. Step 2Development
  3. Step 3Testing
  4. Step 4Client demo

2 weeks, then again, with the feedback from the demo

  • Redesign for four platforms

We didn't just repaint the old site. We built the new design so that the same components work on desktop, mobile web and in the native apps.

  • Two-week sprints

A working version to try out every two weeks. We set priorities together each sprint, so the important things come first.

  • A demo at the end of every sprint

At the end of every sprint the gotomarketing team sees live what has been built, and their feedback goes straight into the next sprint.

Studio model

Your own development team, not a project.

We work with gotomarketing in the Studio model: a dedicated team that knows the product and grows with it.

  • Fixed monthly capacity, predictable costs
  • Change isn't a new quote, it's part of the next sprint
  • Operations, support and product strategy from one team

Portrait of Wolf Gáborgotomarketing

In the client's words

“A surprisingly independent and proactive team!

When the project started, I was worried that the web and mobile app development would pile a lot of extra work on me, but the Codeyard team practically briefed themselves: they put the development plan together from our existing materials.

On top of that, they came up with development ideas that would never have occurred to me, so I had to put in less work and got more than I expected. And our customers love our new, clean, fast, smart system.

win-win-win!”
