Rádió 1 is one of Hungary's most popular radio stations. We rebuilt its iOS and Android app from scratch: stable live playback, a more thoughtful interface and a new design that fits the brand, connected to the existing backend.

The challenge
In a radio app, stability is the product.
Listeners aren't looking for features, they want the radio to play. The previous app couldn't always guarantee that, and its interface didn't really show how much Rádió 1 has to offer. The joint decision: don't patch it, rebuild it.
Playback has to hold up
In the previous app, listening wasn't always uninterrupted and the connection dropped from time to time. For a radio app, this is the one thing that has to be right.
More content than met the eye
Live broadcast, catch-up, mixes, news, shows: Rádió 1 had far more to offer than the old interface made easy to reach.

The new app is built on four tabs: what's playing now, what you missed, the DJ mixes, and everything else. None is more than a tap away.

01. On Air
Open it and Rádió 1 is playing. You see what's on, and one tap switches to live video.
02. Catch-up
Missed the Balázsék morning show? Replay it, split into chapters and available to download.
03. Mixes
The latest episodes of WORLD IS MINE Radio Show, DISCO*S HIT and Rádió 1 Live Mix, with tracklists.
04. Everything else
News, presenters and shows in one menu, in horizontally scrolling rows with images.

One tap on the On Air screen and you can see the studio too.

Replayed shows are split into chapters, so you can jump straight to the part you want.

Episodes can be downloaded and listened to without a signal.

Listeners can show with one tap how much they liked what they heard.

The best radio app is one you don't have to think about: start it and it plays, for hours, even in your pocket. That's why the new app was built around playback first, and everything else came after.
Rebuilt, not patched
We rebuilt the iOS and Android apps from scratch, so the foundations of playback are new too.
Connected to the existing backend
Rádió 1's server-side systems didn't need replacing: the new apps connect to the existing backend.
Plays in the background
Live radio and catch-up keep playing when the listener leaves the app or locks the phone.
Ongoing maintenance
We still run the app after launch: updates, new features and keeping up with new iOS and Android versions.
