Case study · Xeropan

A language lesson in five minutes. For five million learners.

Xeropan is a playful language learning app with AI conversation, video lessons and personalised review, on iOS, Android and in the browser. In Hungarian schools, it powers the KRÉTA Foreign Language Preparation Module (IFM), part of KRÉTA, Hungary's national school administration system. We've been developing the product with the Xeropan team for years.

The challenge

Language learning doesn't fail on knowledge, it fails in the second week.

Everyone starts. Few keep going. A language app has to be a teacher, a coach and a game at once: short lessons, instant feedback and a reason to open it again tomorrow. In schools, it also has to fit the way teachers work and the processes of KRÉTA.

  • Five minutes on the bus, not an hour at a desk

Language learning doesn't fail on the textbook, it fails on consistency. The app has to fit into a few spare minutes a day, and bring learners back tomorrow.

  • You need to speak, not just tap

Multiple choice is quick, but it doesn't prepare you to speak. Learners need to practise pronunciation and real conversation too, on their phone.

  • In school, it has to work for the teacher too

With a whole class, a good app isn't enough: students need to sign in, join groups, get homework and receive grades, the way they're used to in KRÉTA.

The weekly streak screen: Miss a day, your streak stays! The streak survives a missed day.

The goal

Miss a day, keep your streak.

Small decisions that bring learners back tomorrow.

The solution

One lesson in five moves

From the learning path to AI conversation: this is what a day in Xeropan looks like, on the phone.

Real screens from the iOS app, with an English interface.

  1. The Xeropan learning path: level B1, topic tabs (Holiday, School, Reading, TV) and the lessons of the first unit with vocabulary, video, grammar and AI conversation.

Step 01: A learning path by topic

Levels, topics and units: every unit has vocabulary, video, grammar and AI conversation, in 7–9 minute lessons.

  2. A word order exercise: the learner puts the words in order (he always talks about Mexico), with feedback on the correct answer and a mini grammar explanation below.

    Step 02: Short, fast-paced exercises

Word order, translation, matching: one tap and you instantly know whether your answer was right.

  3. After a wrong answer, a detailed mini grammar explanation of the would like structure, marking sentence by sentence which is correct and which is not.

Step 03: Mini grammar after every answer

It doesn't just say the answer is wrong, it explains why. Sentence by sentence, on the learner's own answer.

  4. An AI conversation with the character Arlo about a dream trip, with the lesson's phrases and the stars earned so far.

Step 04: Conversation with an AI character

In writing or by voice, using the lesson's phrases. To earn the stars, you have to see the conversation through.

  5. The vocabulary screen of the Practice tab: the Vocabulary Health meter at 11.1 per cent, strong, weak and saved words, and a button to practise weak words.

    Step 05: Vocabulary that sticks

Strong and weak words, a vocabulary meter, and a button that drills exactly the weak words.

In the browser too

The same learning, on a big screen

The web interface is made for school computer labs and the desk at home: the same account, the same progress, with instructions in Hungarian.

KRÉTA integration · IFM

Language learning in KRÉTA, for every Hungarian school.

The IFM module is built on Xeropan and has been part of the school system since 2022. Students sign in with their KRÉTA account, teachers assign work in the interface they already know, and grades go into the e-register. English, German, Spanish, French, and Hungarian as a foreign language.

  • Sign in with a KRÉTA account

Students sign in to the app with their KRÉTA username and password, or launch it from the KRÉTA app (More → Language learning).

  • Automatic sync

Students are placed in their own class and group, and teachers see their progress automatically.

  • Homework and grades

Teachers assign lesson packs from the KRÉTA Digital Collaboration Space or the Classroom interface, and grades go into the e-register.

  • Free in public education

Free of charge for students in public and vocational education and their teachers. Parents can use it too.

Features

Teacher, coach and game in one app

Every feature serves the same purpose: bringing learners back tomorrow, and making sure they actually progress.

AI conversation and pronunciation

Speech recognition with pronunciation feedback, and AI characters to talk to about the lesson's topic. AI speaking simulations too, from December 2025.

An AI conversation with the character Arlo about a dream trip, with the lesson's phrases and the stars earned so far.

Professor Max's story

A time-travel story across 13 islands: every level is an era, and the stars move Max forward. It's the framework of the curriculum, not decoration.

Video lessons from real content

News, trailers, film clips: the living language as it really sounds, with vocabulary and grammar exercises.

Streaks, leagues, certificates

XP, levels, a weekly league and certificates. The streak survives a missed day, so one bad day doesn't break the momentum.

Personalised review

The app tracks which words are weak and brings them back alongside new material. A placement test and level skipping for faster learners.

English for professionals

11 professional courses, from business English through IT, medical and legal English to hospitality, for companies and institutions.

Start on your phone, continue on your computer

The same account and progress on iOS, Android and in the browser. Sign in with Apple, Google, Facebook or KRÉTA.
