Case study · Numio

Contact by licence plate, no phone number needed.

Numio connects vehicle owners in a new way: you can reach anyone by their licence plate, anonymously, quickly and directly, without publicly sharing your private phone number. We designed and built the app.

The challenge

How do you reach a driver you don't know?

Someone has blocked you in. Someone's headlights are still on. The car next to you has a flat tyre and the owner is nowhere to be seen. These situations happen every day, and they all share the same snag: there's no channel between two vehicle owners. What exists is either unreliable or comes at the cost of privacy.

  • A note on the windscreen

It smudges in the rain, blows away in the wind, and you never know whether the other person got it at all.

  • A phone number on the dashboard

Anyone can take a photo of it. You give your private number to strangers just to be reachable.

  • Helpless waiting

You've been blocked in, someone's lights are on, a tyre is flat, and there's no one to tell.

On a rainy evening, a note tucked under the wiper on a parked car's windscreen.

The old way

A note that may or may not get there.

The solution had to be faster, more reliable and more discreet than that.

The solution

Five steps from licence plate to conversation

Numio is built on a single insight: a licence plate is public, a phone number isn't. That became a flow you can complete in a minute.

Real screens from the app, with English and German interfaces.

  1. The Numio login screen with username and password fields on a dark interface.

    Step 01: Create an account

A username and a password, no unnecessary data. Your profile is tied to your vehicles, not your phone number.

  2. Entering the six-digit verification code received by SMS during Numio registration.

    Step 02: SMS verification

A six-digit code confirms there's a real person behind the account. The system knows your number, other users don't.

  3. The Numio garage screen with a vehicle profile: photo, licence plate, model, year and mileage.

Step 03: Vehicles in the garage

Car or motorbike, even several: with licence plate, model, year, mileage and your own photo.

  4. The Numio home screen with quick actions to add a vehicle, search by licence plate and message customer support.

Step 04: Search a licence plate

Type in the plate, and if the owner is registered, you can message them straight away. One search, no detours.

  5. Anonymous chat in Numio: one user sends a photo to let another know their rear tyre is flat.

Step 05: Anonymous message and chat

Text or photo, with an instant push notification. The conversation continues in real-time chat, without phone numbers.

Features

Seven features, one goal: reaching the other person, safely

Numio doesn't try to do everything. It does the few things a vehicle owner really needs, and does them well.

Contact by licence plate

The plate is the address. The person you're looking for is one search away, if they're registered on Numio. No name, no phone number needed.

User and vehicle profiles

One user, several vehicles. Cars and motorbikes in one garage, with technical details and photos.

Photo and content sharing

A photo says more: a flat tyre, a scratch, or just a beautiful car in the car park.

Chat between users

Real-time conversation with read receipts, the messaging experience people are used to.

Community features

Drivers, riders and enthusiasts in one place. Not only for alerts, but for getting to know each other too.

Secure communication

Verified users, anonymous contact, a protected channel. Privacy is not up for negotiation.

Push notifications

When someone writes, you know immediately. With headlights left on, minutes count.

Privacy and security

Not a feature. A principle.

An app that connects strangers by their licence plates can only work if users are sure they reveal only as much about themselves as they want. That's why in Numio, privacy and security aren't an afterthought, they're the starting point of the design.

  • Your phone number stays hidden

It's needed for verification, not for communication. The other party only sees your username and the licence plate.

  • Verified users

SMS code verification at registration. Real drivers instead of anonymous accounts.

  • Anonymous contact

You decide when and what you reveal about yourself. A licence plate is all a conversation needs.

  • Privacy by design

Encrypted connections, minimal data collection, and privacy considered from the very first screen designs.

Privacy and security are our top priority.

Numio's core principle
A car meet in an underground car park: drivers and a motorcyclist chatting, one of them holding a phone.

Community

Not just a messenger. A community for vehicle owners.

Numio is made for drivers, motorcyclists and vehicle enthusiasts who want an easy way to get in touch with each other. Thanks to the garage, vehicle profiles and photo sharing, the app stays alive even when nothing's wrong: a beautiful car in the car park is reason enough to write.

  • Vehicle profiles with photos, technical details and even a for-sale label
  • Drivers and riders in one community, not in separate apps
  • A friendly gesture is reason enough to write, not just trouble

How it was built

From an idea to a working product, on two platforms.

We took Numio from concept to live operation: user experience, mobile app, backend and the security layer in the hands of one team. That way no details got lost between suppliers, and privacy didn't end up as a patch added later.

  • Concept and user experience

The licence-plate-based contact flow, balancing anonymity and trust on every screen.

  • Mobile app for iOS and Android

A native-feeling, dark, clean interface in Numio's own brand identity, on both platforms.

  • Backend and real-time chat

User and vehicle profiles, plate search, messages and photo sharing on a scalable backend.

  • SMS verification and push infrastructure

A six-digit code at registration and an instant notification for every new message.

  • Privacy by design

The phone number kept separate from the public profile, minimal data collection, secure communication.

  • Multilingual interface

English and German interface from launch, tailored to the target markets.
